Bioinformatics Scientist / Computational Biologist

The Bioinformatics & Data Scientist will analyze multi-dimensional biological and genomics data, enhance algorithms and develop novel methods for the utilization in Engine’s analytics platform that combines advanced system biology analytics with genomics data science and machine learning for accelerated drug discovery and biomarker identification.  The successful candidate will bring hands-on experience in bioinformatics, algorithm development, in-silico drug discovery, data science, machine learning and cloud compute.   As a Bioinformatics and Data Scientist, you will collaborate globally with Engine’s teams and external partners in Asia, US and EU.   

 

 

Minimum Requirements

 

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics / Statistical Genetics / Machine Learning / AI, or related field.

  • Experience in bioinformatics, genomics data analysis, algorithm development and machine learning.

  • Experience in cloud based (e.g. AWS) data science.

  • Programming skills in Python, AngularJS, Node.js., Java. R., Matlab, SQL and NoSQL dbs.

  • Agile development methodologies such as SCRUM and Kanban.

  • Strong communication and global collaboration skills.

 

 

Desired Skills & Experience

 

  • Hands-on industry experience in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and multi-dimensional omics data analysis, algorithm development and machine learning in application for drug discovery and biomarker identification.

  • Real time analytics, predictive models, classification, in-silico validation, queries and visualization of high throughput biological data.

Research Scientist

Location: San Francisco Bay Area (San Carlos, CA)

The candidate will work closely with our senior management and lead scientists in the area of functional genomics with focus on planning and executing critical experiments on our strategic projects. The successful candidate will bring cutting-edge, hands-on academic or industry expertise in functional genomics and phenotypic screens. In addition, they will manage collaborations with academic or pharmaceutical collaborators, thus will have demonstrated experience leading cross-functional projects with external collaborators. 

Responsibilities

  • Hands-on molecular and cell biology in support of genetic screening, experimental design, resource planning, execution, and data analysis.

  • Characterization of new targets and work with bioinformaticians to investigate gene networks involved in oncology.

  • Design studies to validate novel targets in oncology.

  • Implementation of in vitro CRISPR-Cas screens.

  • Bring capability of transcriptomics efforts- establishing both bulk and single cell RNA-seq technologies and data analysis platform.

  • For drug discovery, perform studies to support Go / No-Go decisions for small molecule or antibody drug testing. Lead communication with CROs for in vitro studies.

  • Work collaboratively with the Engine teams in Asia and US.

  • Involved in collaborations with external partners, including academic labs.

  • Writing scientific work plans and project proposals and managing budgets, timelines, communications, and priorities.

  • Contribute to scientific strategy and planning as necessary. This work involves communication with scientists at other global locations, so some flexibility in working hours will be required.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. with 3+ years of relevant work experience in functional genomics / cell biology / molecular biology / genomics. In depth understanding of oncology

  • Proven track record in planning and execution of genomic screens, e.g. CRISPR-Cas, RNAi. Analysis of functional genomic data to elucidate dynamic networks for therapeutic target identification.

  • Strong experimental molecular and cell biology techniques, such as mammalian tissue culture.

  • Familiarity with large genomic datasets – data mining, cross-referencing database information with primary literature. Analysis of NGS/RNA-sequence data.

  • Preferred experience in developing successful collaborations and relationships with academic and/or industrial partners and KoLs.

  • Ability to execute on complex, multiple projects within strict timelines.

  • Excellence and rigor in data interpretation skills, demonstrated by a successful track record in overseeing projects.

  • Cross-functional team experience, including experience working with global teams is a plus.

Job Description:

The candidate will work as a member of the Target Discovery Group with a team of scientists in the development of next generation cancer therapies. Typical projects will involve extensive hands-on laboratory work involving a range of molecular and cellular biology techniques. These can include using the company's proprietary CombiGEM/ CRISPR molecular biology platform in human cell-lines with the goal of transforming patient lives by working towards identifying new targets efficiently.

 

The candidate must be able to work independently in key technical areas and collaborate effectively within the Engine team of scientists and other research associates, external collaborators, service providers, and vendors.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the following tasks: –

  • Genetic manipulation of cells using molecular cloning techniques. For this, prior work experience in a research laboratory with PCR, DNA extraction and purification, molecular cloning, and bacterial cell culture is required.

  • Hands-on experience with CRISPR/Cas9 technology, RNA, and protein extraction is highly desirable.

  • Build molecular libraries genetic screening and drug discovery.

  • Draft protocols and develop SOPs for new assays, evaluate and decide on QC criteria.

  • Biochemical analysis of cell viability, protein expression analysis by western blots.

  • Sample preparation for Sanger DNA sequencing, next-generation sequencing (NGS), RNA-sequencing, qPCR.

  • Day-to-day running of assays for screening biological functions and phenotypes in mammalian cell-lines.

  • Flow cytometry and fluorescent activated cell sorting experiments.

  • Operate, maintain, and track calibration and performance of laboratory equipment.

  • Stock check laboratory supplies, procurement and receiving consumables, and conduct general laboratory administration.

  • Keep detailed logs of lab activities as hard copy and electronic lab notebooks.

 

 

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education – A life sciences BS/ BSc/ BTech with 2-3 years of post-degree work experience, or MS/ MSc/ MTech with at least 1 year of post-degree work experience in the field of Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Cancer Research, Pharmaceutical engineering, or related fields.

 

Skills and Experience-

  • A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques including primer design, Sanger sequence analysis, PCR/qPCR, gene cloning, DNA/RNA isolation, and bacterial culture for plasmid propagation is required.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in cell biology techniques including mammalian cell culture, and microscopy.

  • Experience in R&D laboratory in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry, or startup is highly desirable.

  • Experience in high-throughput cloning, and sample preparation for NGS or RNA-sequencing is a plus.

  • Experience with immune cell handling (PBMCs, T-cells, NK-cells) is desirable.

Data Scientist / Sr. Data Scientist

We are seeking a Data Scientist or Senior Data Scientist with strong expertise in machine learning, statistics or computational biology to design data infrastructure and predictive models for accelerated target and biomarker discovery. You will work with integrating, modeling and interpreting a diverse set of biological data including genomics data, pathway and interaction data and text mining data from internal and external sources to drive scientific insight. You will have a track record of success in deriving insights from heterogenous sources of biological data through machine learning approaches.  You will also bring hands-on experience in algorithm development, data science, machine learning and cloud computing, and will have applied these skills to ideally target discovery. Essential for this role, you will collaborate globally with Engine’s teams and external partners in Asia, US and EU.   

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Computational Biology / Statistics / Machine Learning / Computer Science, or a related field.

  • Expertise in comprehensive set of data analytics and modeling methods using machine learning and deep learning approaches and deep understanding of the theories and algorithms

  • Familiarity with multi-dimensional omics data and biochemical experimental data and their analysis

  • Experience in cloud based (e.g. AWS) data science. Familiarity with SageMaker is an advantage.
