Bioinformatics / Computational Biology Team Lead

Location: Singapore or San Francisco Bay Area (San Carlos, CA)

The Team Lead of Bioinformatics and Data Science will lead the data analysis and algorithm enhancement of Engine’s analytics platform, which combines advanced system biology analytics with genomics data science and machine learning for accelerated drug discovery and biomarker identification.  The successful candidate will bring extensive hands-on industry experience in bioinformatics, algorithm development, data science and cloud compute.   As a Team Lead of Bioinformatics & Data Science, you will establish and lead a team of bioinformaticians and data scientists, and will collaborate globally with Engine’s teams and external partners in Asia, US and EU.   

 

 

Minimum Requirements

 

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics / Statistical Genetics, or related field.

  • 4 years of industry experience in bioinformatics, genomics data analysis, algorithm development and machine learning.

  • 4 years of industry experience in cloud based (e.g. AWS) data science.

  • Programming skills in Python, AngularJS, Node.js., Java. R., Matlab, SQL and NoSQL dbs.

  • Agile development methodologies such as SCRUM and Kanban.

  • Program management and prioritization of complex multi-phase global project portfolios.

  • Strong communication, collaboration and leadership skills.

 

 

Desired Skills & Experience

 

  • Extensive hands-on experience in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and multi-dimensional omics data analysis and algorithm development, in application for drug discovery and biomarker identification.

  • Real time analytics, queries and visualization of high throughput biological data.

  • Strong peer reviewed publication record in bioinformatics and data science.

  • Experience in biological interpretation, pathway analysis and disease biology.

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) experience including DevOps, Security, VPC, EC2, EMR, Docker, SPARK, ElasticSearch, Lambda, Redshift, and Amazon Machine Learning (TensorFlow, MXNet).

Research Scientist

Location: San Francisco Bay Area (San Carlos, CA)

Job Description

 

The candidate will work closely with our senior management and lead scientists in the area of functional genomics with focus on planning and executing critical experiments on our strategic projects. The successful candidate will bring cutting-edge, hands-on academic or industry expertise in functional genomics and phenotypic screens. In addition, they will manage collaborations with academic or pharmaceutical collaborators, thus will have demonstrated experience leading cross-functional projects with external collaborators. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Hands-on molecular and cell biology in support of genetic screening, experimental design, resource planning, execution, and data analysis.

  • Characterization of new targets and work with bioinformaticians to investigate gene networks involved in oncology.

  • Design studies to validate novel targets in oncology.

  • Implementation of in vitro CRISPR-Cas screens.

  • Bring capability of transcriptomics efforts- establishing both bulk and single cell RNA-seq technologies and data analysis platform.

  • For drug discovery, perform studies to support Go / No-Go decisions for small molecule or antibody drug testing. Lead communication with CROs for in vitro studies.

  • Work collaboratively with the Engine teams in Asia and US.

  • Involved in collaborations with external partners, including academic labs.

  • Writing scientific work plans and project proposals and managing budgets, timelines, communications, and priorities.

  • Contribute to scientific strategy and planning as necessary. This work involves communication with scientists at other global locations, so some flexibility in working hours will be required.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. with 3+ years of relevant work experience in functional genomics / cell biology / molecular biology / genomics. In depth understanding of oncology

  • Proven track record in planning and execution of genomic screens, e.g. CRISPR-Cas, RNAi. Analysis of functional genomic data to elucidate dynamic networks for therapeutic target identification.

  • Strong experimental molecular and cell biology techniques, such as mammalian tissue culture.

  • Familiarity with large genomic datasets – data mining, cross-referencing database information with primary literature. Analysis of NGS/RNA-sequence data.

  • Preferred experience in developing successful collaborations and relationships with academic and/or industrial partners and KoLs.

  • Ability to execute on complex, multiple projects within strict timelines.

  • Excellence and rigor in data interpretation skills, demonstrated by a successful track record in overseeing projects.

  • Cross-functional team experience, including experience working with global teams is a plus.

  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills in proposing critical go/no-go decisions for projects.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills – verbal, written, and presentations.

  • Experience mentoring junior scientists and research associates.

  • 1-3 years of pharma R&D experience is preferred.

  • Strong peer-reviewed publication record
